Mold is a growing concern as people can end up getting health problems because of it. And unfortunately, a humid bathroom is the ideal place for mold to spread. It can very easily accumulate to a point where it gets hard to manage and can even do damage to the house itself.
The thing is that there are a number of ways to keep the humidity down so that you don’t get so much mold that you have trouble getting rid of it. The trick is to try your best to keep it from growing, but if it does then it won’t be much and you can easily take care of it.
In this article, we will go over exactly how to take care of your bathroom to prevent mold from growing.
Install a fan
Most people only install a bathroom fan when they don’t have a window to allow the moist air to escape. Or, the fan is so weak it is essentially useless as it does little to remove the humidity from the room.
Even with a window, you are waiting for the room to dry out but it often doesn’t. Which is why you should have a fan installed even when you have a window. Turning it on before you take a shower and letting it run for at least 30 minutes afterward is a good way to get rid of the moist air.
And instead of your typical bathroom fan, install an inline exhaust fan that will take care of the moisture in minutes so your bathroom is dry much faster.
Use a squeegee
That water on your shower walls and doors won’t be sucked up by the fan anytime soon. It’s that water that is responsible for the mold in your grout between your tiles. By getting rid of that water right away you will be ensuring that there is less humidity in general in the bathroom. Not only that, but you will have far less risk of moldy grout in your shower.
Wash your mat and towels
Mold loves to find a place to grow in areas with lots of fibers. In other words, the shower mat and your towels. If it is moist in the bathroom, then the mat will be the ideal place for it to grow and the spores will spread around.
The same actually goes for your towels. If you use your towel a few times before washing then they can trap the mold spores and allow them to grow. This is what causes the musty smell which makes you wash your towel.
Make sure to not wait until things smell musty before you wash them as this is allowing the mold to spread.
Fix the caulking
When caulking gets old it starts to dry out and crack. Then, water is allowed to get past it and into your walls or floor. This is when mold becomes a bigger problem as it can ruin the walls in your house and make it very difficult to get rid of. Not to mention expensive.
