When you arrive home each day, are you happy with what you see when you pull into your driveway? If you’re not, it might be time to get to work boosting the curb appeal of your home.
Adding plants and flowers around your yard is one of the easiest ways to spruce things up. Provided you have the time to tend to everything, plants can make your home look good year-round.
If you’re apprehensive about digging into the earth, there are some simple yet quirky potted plant ideas that look great. Many of these you can DIY.
Keep reading to learn how you can use different types of planters and containers to take your home’s curb appeal to the next level.
Use a Log as a Planter
Turning a log into a planter that holds flowers is a great way to make something both rustic and practical. It’s also easy to do—provided you know how to use a hatchet.
Start by cutting into a firewood log with your hatchet. You want to hack out a rectangular section where you’ll then pour the soil. Make sure to leave space on either side of the log.
Once you have your channel, add in the soil as well as a mixture of different annuals. To prevent the log from blowing over, you can use some rocks to stabilize it.
Use an Old Chair
If you have any old dining room chairs, consider turning them into planters instead of just putting them by the end of your driveway.
All you have to do is take out the seat part of the chair, then replace it with a flower basket that fits inside. If you have to, use outdoor wires to attach the basket in place.
If you want to create something eye-catching, try painting the chair a bright color. You can then match the flowers to the chair and stay in the same color palette or choose something contrasting.
Get Creative With Cinderblocks
You might not think of cinderblocks as being a great design element, but the truth is that they’re both striking and modern.
Because of their minimalistic appearance, cinderblocks look best with simple plants and colors. Grasses, mosses, and other greens will pop inside of them, especially when paired with dark fertilizer.
You can build cinderblock planters into a raised bed or use them on their own at ground level.
Plant Succulents in Seashells
If you’re after small accent pieces, consider using seashells as planters. To do this, you’ll need to find shells that are large enough to hold soil. You’ll also want to ensure that the soil won’t spill out of them.
Once you have your shells, drill some holes in the bottom so that water can drain out. Succulents don’t do well in soil that doesn’t drain.
Add in the soil and succulents, and make sure to put them in a place that gets enough sun.
Plant Flowers in Metal Watering Cans
If you have old metal watering cans that you used to water plants with, you can complete the circle of life and turn them into planters themselves.
As watering cans themselves are often large, make sure to plant a large and lush arrangement. Small plants and petite flowers won’t scale well.
If you don’t have watering cans, try looking around at yard or estate sales. If you’re able to acquire different-sized cans, they can look great going up a set of deck stairs.
Create a Mural With a Wood Palette
Wood palettes are something that many people have but don’t do much with besides burn. Instead of using it in your next bonfire, consider using a wood palette as a holder for planters.
Lean the palette against a wall or the edge of your porch, then attach metal rings across the surface to hold small pots.
If you have an herb garden, this sort of setup works as a great way to showcase your different plants. To further add both aesthetic and practicality, paint the top of the pots with chalkboard paint. You can then write out what sort of herb is inside.
Create a Hanging PVC Garden
If you have old PVC pipes lying around and are feeling handy, you can turn them into a hanging garden.
Cut the pipes in half horizontally, then attach holders to the bottom. You can then make a hanging ladder by using chains and hanging them from a roof or the side of your house.
Like cinderblocks, PVC pipes look best with simple, bright green plants. To see more modern and striking pots and containers, check out Pots Planters & More.
Use a Wheelbarrow
Using a small, wooden wheelbarrow as a rustic planter is a great accent piece for almost any garden.
To contrast with the simple look of the wheelbarrow, make sure that you fill it with lush and overflowing flowers. You want it to look wild.
If you want to add a burst of color, you can also choose to paint the wheelbarrow. Like the old chair, make sure to match the wheelbarrow color with the flowers inside.
