One cannot predict how and where storms occur, and the mess it causes. As challenging as recovery can be, we can still strive for professional restoration to damaged houses. It can be quite difficult to cope up with this problem, but one can definitely move forward.
What damage can a storm cause? It causes massive destruction to personal property and public areas too. It breaks and throws away everything in its path until it is subsided. And we are the victims of these severe strikes. Yet, after damage, we will always emerge back to lead a normal life.
This is what we can do after our house experiences a storm damage.
- Stay Safe: The first and most important thing everyone should do is to check whether the affected site is safe to venture. Check the local news and be on the lookout for any disturbing news. Hazards such as broken furniture, collapsed roof, glass, kitchen utensils, wood etc will be lying everywhere. We should tread on carefully.
- Avoid Water: Do not step on any water that is close to electric power lines. In case of heavy rain, the house will be filled with water. Open the windows if you have to. Make sure all the water is drained out.
- Assess the Damage: Check every corner in your house. Check for a
Leak in the roof (if a tree fell, it might cause dents in the roof)
Missing shingles (the roof’s support and balance is important)
Holes in the roof (it should be covered)
other damaged property that is not safe to use. Make sure to discard them.
Check for broken window panels. They can hardly withstand the harsh wind. Repair the broken areas before further damage.
Another important thing to do: Check on your neighbours. There may be elderly or disabled ones. See to it that their needs are met and also find someone to help them sort out the mess. The pets will also be in shock after such incidents. Keep them indoors and nurture them too. Use a leash when you go out, because it may show its fear to unknown people.
Call your contractor: Make sure your sewer system is working. To confirm that, call your house contractor or a local homebuilder and let him inspect your house. Get all the information from him and make sure you deliver all those to your insurance company. Read your insurance policy to know what benefits you can attain from it and act accordingly.
Food: The gas system may also be damaged in your kitchen. Check for leaks and be alert if you smell gas around. Don’t cook anything as soon as you are renovating your house. Get food from outside. Make sure everything is made re-useable again.
After we assess the damage and take good measures to have it under control, we can slowly lead our normal life. It takes courage to rebuild everything, but with persistence and patience, anything is possible.
