Reorganizing your closet can do wonders for your life.
There’s hardly anything more frustrating than having to dig through a messy pile of shoes and shirts just to get dressed in the morning.
By cleaning and rearranging your closet, you can make your life much simpler.
And it doesn’t even take that long.
We’ve outlined this guide to help you get started.
Start By Cleaning (And Purging!)
If you want to reorganize your closet effectively, you have to start by decluttering.
decluttering means that you have to get rid of all those old clothes you don’t wear anymore.
This is hard for many people. But, if you have an item of clothing that you haven’t touched in over a year, it’s probably time to let it go.
When getting rid of your old clothes, you have a few options. You can either sell them, give them to friends, or donate them to charity. Figure out which one of these options works best for you and get it done as quickly as possible.
Then, you should clean your closet thoroughly. Sweep, vacuum, and do whatever you need to do to make it look new. If paint will help you make it look new again, do that too.
When you have a nice, dust-free space, you’ll be much more excited to fill it with your newly-organized wardrobe.
Move Your Out-of-Season Clothes to Storage
Obviously, you’re not going to be able to get rid of everything. There are certain items you have to keep around even if they just hang in the back of your closet for most of the year.
But jackets, hats, mittens, and other seasonal clothing take up space.
A lot of space.
So they can really become a burden, especially if you’re working with a small closet.
The next thing you want to do, then, is to pack those things up and store them. Whether you store them in totes and put them in the basements, or fold them up and keep them in bags under your bed, you’ve got to get that stuff out of sight.
When the time comes for you to wear them again, you can pull it all out of storage and make space in your closet for them. Unless you’re actively wearing them, make sure that their not stealing valuable space.
Invest in a Closet Storage System
The best way to organize the clothes in your closet is to invest in some organizational tools. Whether you buy some shoe organizers, hanger racks, shelving units or storage boxes, these products will help you keep your stuff in order.
Closet shoe racks, for example, help you to keep all of your footwear off the ground where it’s likely to pile up. This works well for folks who have too many shoes to store on the ground neatly. They come in many different forms, from shelves to door-hangers, so you should be able to find something that fits your space perfectly.
This step may take a week or so because you’ll have to spend time browsing for the perfect items. But, once you find a good system, you can install it and start putting your clothes back in the closet.
DIY Closet Organizer Ideas
Don’t feel like buying a storage system? There are plenty of DIY closet organizers you can make using some common household items.
Instead of buying a new shelf, for example, you can just move your dresser into the closet (if it fits). This will give you a whole bunch of drawer space that you can use to store pants, t-shirts, socks, and other stuff.
Plus, you may even be able to hang clothing on a bar above it (if space is tall enough and the dresser is short enough.
Or, you can actually double-up on hangers by attaching them with soda can tabs. That way, you won’t have to go out and buy a specialized hanging system.
Which reminds me… never overlook the value of clothes hangers. If you’re crafty, you can store everything from sandals and scarves to hats and boots.
Add “Closet Maintenance” to Your Weekly Chore Schedule
Once you’ve gone through the effort of decluttering and reorganizing your closet, you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t get messy again.
I mean, it’s pretty easy to spend hours cleaning and then end up with a pile of clothes and shoes in your room again a week later.
If you don’t want that you to happen, you have to make sure that you take a few minutes to tidy up each week.
It doesn’t take long, either. All you have to do is pick up a bit, straighten out all of the hangers, and put everything back in the right spot.
So, while you’re decluttering, decide on a time that you’ll revisit your closet each week. Whether it’s Saturday mornings, Sunday afternoons, or Wednesdays after work, you should dedicate some time to it every few days.
If it helps, write down the time on your whiteboard or in your calendar. That way, you can be sure that all of your hard work pays off.
