The size of your furniture plays a significant role in the look and feel of your interior space. Furniture that is too big can dominate a space, making it feel stuffy and restrict free movement. Furniture that is too small may make an interior space seem deserted and empty. Since there is a large second-hand market for furniture, it may not be a bad idea to sell furniture that is not the correct size of a space. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you should consider when determining if your furniture is the correct size for your space.
Open Spaces
It is very important that people should be able to move comfortably inside your home. Your furniture should not restrict pathways and one should be able to walk comfortably through the opening between to pieces of furniture. This will ensure that the place won’t feel claustrophobic and it will make space appear neat and tidy.
The sofa should be around 7 feet from the television, the coffee table should be one and a half feet away from the sofa and other furniture have to be able to comfortably fit within 10 feet from the sofa. This allows for comfortable living room interaction.
If this is not possible due to the size of the furniture, you may have to consider making some changes.
Scale
The furniture also has to be the right size relative to each other. If you have small and petite chairs, and oversized and stuffed sofa will look dominating and out of place. If you are putting living furniture together from scratch, try to find furniture from one set to ensure congruence.
Even though all the furniture may fit inside a room with enough space, it is also important that the furniture should be the right size relative to the scale of the room itself.
Rug
A rug plays an integral in the way your interior space is perceived. In fact, even if your furniture is a bit too big or too small, you may be able to take some remedial action with a rug. The rug should be sized accordingly. The bigger the room, the bigger your rug should be. In some cases, the space between the edges of the rug and the wall can be as wide as a few inches. A rug that is the right size and texture can also create the illusion of space. It is important to do some experimentation with rugs that you already own to determine what will be the correct fit.
When it comes to rugs, the general rule is that all furniture should be placed in the same way on the rug. For example, if the couch two front legs are on the rug and the two back legs are on the floor, the rest of the furniture should be arranged in the same way. If you have oversized furniture, you can create the illusion that they are smaller by placing all the furniture completely on a large rug that covers the floor almost completely.
Bedrooms
You spend around a third of your life in your bedroom. A good starting point would be to choose a bed size and work from there. It is ideal to have the head of the bed against the wall with the foot end on a rug. If you have a larger rug, try to fit the entire bed as well as the nightstands on it. Also, try to have enough space on the side for nightstands to fit comfortable.
Final Words
When it comes to single beds, you can be a bit more lenient since single beds don’t have the same dominant presence as a double, king, or queen-sized bed. With single beds and depending on the room, it may be better to place a rug beside the bed instead of underneath the two front legs. This will make the remaining space look bigger and more welcoming.
