There are many signs, some subtle, others not so much, that indicate your windows need to be replaced. Just because the glass isn’t cracked or broken doesn’t mean your windows aren’t in bad shape.
Depending on what your window frame is built out of, you may expect 10 years of life, or even up to 40 with certain styles of windows.
We’ll cover these nuances and the five tell-tale signs that you need window replacement in your home ASAP.
1. Windows Won’t Open Or Close Properly
This is a common symptom of older windows. As time goes by, dirt, dust, and debris build up in window wells and can make it difficult to open or close your window.
A suggestion is to start with a dusting and a vacuuming, to try and remove anything that could have lodged itself in the window’s track.
Still struggling? It’s possible the spring is too tight, or even that the rollers aren’t functioning as intended.
Unsure if your window is closing properly? There should be a seal that ensures the clasp tightens and prevents air from leaking in and out of your home.
If your windows aren’t closing properly, this poses a major security risk. Improve your home with new windows that offer improved security and style.
2. Moisture Between Window Panes
Condensation building up between your window panes is often a result of humidity and temperature differences between indoors and out. If you regularly see condensation between panes, the windows are likely due for replacement.
Further, if you see moisture build-up during storms, there may be a crack somewhere in the panes and they will need replacement
3. Windows Aren’t Weatherproofed
This is a common issue in older homes. Windows that haven’t been replaced in over 20 years likely will have single-pane windows.
This is a problem, not just for your home, but for your wallet. Energystar estimates that homeowners can save anywhere from $50-$400 annually by switching their single-pane windows to higher-efficiency versions.
If your windows are leaking heat and cold, get them replaced as soon as possible. Why waste energy and money?
4. You Need Soundproofing
Do storms show up and all you can hear is wind and thunder whistling through your panes? Or does it bug you when a neighbor’s mowing the lawn at an odd hour?
Maybe that pesky neighborhood dog loves checking in on everyone at midnight? Well, new windows can help dampen all that extra noise.
5. Mold and Water Damage
Most prevalent on wood window frames, this can happen if the frames aren’t treated regularly. This could happen when excessive moisture breaches the home or could be a result of storms and time.
Regardless, vinyl and aluminum window frames suffer far less from these issues. In fact, they have far higher lifespans than wood and come in many different styles.
Wood is still a viable option, however, note that it requires upkeep even after your window replacement services.
Window Replacement Is Important
Whether it’s for style or because the windows are damaged, having functional windows is essential to every home. If you’re experiencing any of the above issues, seek out a window replacement company ASAP.
